Red Blue Shelf

The need for a shelving system to house books, drinks and music in a particular living/entertainment space without having to relegate to ordinary fitted units, triggered the design of a system that oscillates between sculpture and item of furniture.

Inspiration is taken from Mondrian’s 1937 Composition with Yellow, Blue and Red, reimagined in a three-dimensional form, blended with elements of the innovative structural solution adopted by Gerrit Rietveld for the iconic Red Blue Chair, conceived twenty years before Mondrian’s masterpiece. The Red Blue Shelf brings Mondrian and Rietveld together, utilizing the chair’s structure to support and frame a Mondrian-esque composition. It is essentially an objet d’art and a modular system that not only stores items but can also come apart, its parts becoming a series of functional objects. Its black structure is built out of solid tulipwood, and the shelves and storage are made out of MDF.

Not just another piece out of a long factory assembly line, the Red Blue shelf is determined to instil a sense of craftsmanship and the hand-made, right up to the finishing touches, being entirely hand painted.
